Aphrodite and the Birth of Paphos
According to ancient Greek mythology, Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, was born from the sea foam at a place called Petra tou Romiou, near Paphos. After her miraculous birth, it is said that Aphrodite came ashore, making this coast sacred to her followers. The city of Paphos was later founded in her honour, and to this day, the goddess’s spirit is said to bless the area with beauty and romance.
The name “Paphos” is believed to come from Paphos, the son of Pygmalion, a famous figure in mythology. Pygmalion was a sculptor who fell in love with a statue he had carved. The goddess Aphrodite brought the statue to life, and the two had a son named Paphos, who went on to found the city that still bears his name. This intertwining of myth, love, and creation makes Paphos a place rich with cultural significance.
Visitors today can explore Aphrodite’s Rock and the nearby sanctuary dedicated to the goddess, where ancient rituals and offerings were once made to honour her divine presence.
