Discover Uzbekistan – A Journey Begins

Welcome to Uzbekistan

Welcome to Discover Uzbekistan, a place where ancient Silk Road cities, vibrant markets, and a spirit of unmatched hospitality come together in unforgettable ways. Uzbekistan is more than just a travel destination to me—it’s where I was born, in the lively city of Tashkent. My roots run deep here, as my large family, from both my mother’s and father’s sides, called Tashkent home. We were a big, international family, surrounded by a blend of different cultures and traditions that shaped the Uzbekistan I remember.

Growing up in Tashkent was a beautiful experience. Uzbekistan has always been known for its warmth and hospitality. We were lucky to live at the crossroads of so many different cultures, sharing in each other’s traditions and foods. My family cherished this multicultural life, where we could enjoy an endless variety of flavors, from our traditional Uzbek dishes to influences from neighboring cultures. We were blessed with the freshest, most delicious harvests of fruits and vegetables—the sweetest melons, juicy grapes, crisp apples, and an abundance of flavorful vegetables.

My memories of Uzbekistan are filled with the sights, scents, and tastes of a country that feels like home, no matter where I go. It was a good time, and those memories are always with me, bringing me back to moments spent around tables filled with food, laughter, and the warmth of family. My love for Uzbekistan runs deep, and I carry that warmth with me always. Through these posts, I’m excited to share my story, my memories, and my Uzbekistan with you.

An Overview of Uzbekistan

Located in the heart of Central Asia, Uzbekistan is known for its rich history, incredible architecture, and centuries-old culture. It shares borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan, creating a tapestry of influences that enrich Uzbek life. Dominated by deserts and mountain ranges, Uzbekistan’s landscapes are as diverse as they are beautiful, and its people as generous as they are proud of their heritage.

The Silk Road Legacy

For centuries, Uzbekistan was at the center of the ancient Silk Road, connecting the East and the West. This network of trade routes brought not only goods but also ideas, cultures, and beliefs, transforming cities like Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva into bustling centers of civilization. Today, travelers can still wander these cities, marveling at monuments that have witnessed the rise and fall of empires.

Travel Tips -Uzbekistan-What to Know Before You Go

From visa requirements to cash tips and local customs, here’s everything you need to know for a smooth and enjoyable journey.

Visa Requirements

  • Uzbekistan offers a visa-free regime for citizens of 55 countries, allowing a stay of up to 30 days.
  • For travelers from 76 countries, a simplified e-visa system is available.
  • Check the latest visa details through official resources before traveling.

Arriving at the Airport

  • Payment Systems: Uzbekistan is increasingly adapting to international payment systems. Major credit cards are widely accepted in Tashkent, but smaller establishments and businesses even within the capital and certainly outside the capital may only accept cash in local currency, the Uzbekistan Sum (UZS).
  • Keep in mind that dispensing machines are widely available in Tashkent, but not existent outside the capital.
  • Currency Exchange:
  • U.S. dollars (especially $100 bills) are preferred for exchange and offer better rates. Ensure your bills are in pristine condition, as damaged or marked bills may be rejected.
  • Exchange money only at official exchange counters or banks. Avoid street exchanges, as they are illegal and risky.
  • Keep receipts from currency exchanges, as they may be required if you have leftover local currency when leaving the country.
  • Declare any amount exceeding the value of USD 2,000 in cash (in any currency) upon arrival.
  • Cash Tips:
  • Carry a mix of USD denominations ($100, $50, $20) for flexibility.
  • The local currency is often in large denominations, so split your stash and store it securely while traveling.

Local SIM Cards

  • Purchase a local SIM card at the airport for internet access, local calls, or taxi bookings.
  • This is often more affordable than using international roaming and more convenient, as airport staff are accustomed to assisting foreign visitors.
  • SIM cards are pre-paid and require passport registration. If possible, carry a second phone for the setup, as the settings may change on the device used for registration.
  • Top-ups are available at vending machines throughout the country.

Photographers’ and Enthusiasts’ Alert

  • Drones and laser pointers are prohibited. Avoid bringing these items to Uzbekistan to prevent issues at customs.

Transport Tips

  • At the airport, book taxis through the official taxi counter (bally). Payment by credit card is accepted, and you’ll receive a voucher with your cab details for a safe transfer. The staff is English-speaking and very helpful.
  • Luggage: All bags will be screened at customs upon arrival.

Local Registration

  • Visitors must register with local authorities within 3 days of arrival.
  • Hotels automatically handle registration for their guests, including the necessary exit registration when you check out.
  • If staying in multiple locations, ensure you receive an exit receipt from each accommodation to avoid complications at immigration.

General Money-Saving Tips

  • Exchange only a small amount of cash at airport counters for immediate needs, as the rates are less favorable than in the city.
  • Stick to official exchange points and avoid street deals for your safety and financial security.
